Our Practice Range

The South African mining and environmental legal landscape is a challenging one; as national laws and policies constantly evolve to stay abreast with international trends and the national aspiration to address social inequities, while fostering a business friendly environment.

Our directors have developed an in-depth understanding of the regulatory and policy challenges facing clients across several industries and sectors. Listening to the views of key stakeholder within, and beyond, their clients' organisation, to provide advice that supports key objectives, is an important cornerstone of how we engage. This is premised on and understanding of:

- how to contribute to the development and implementation of strategies and processes to proactively identify and address risks and opportunities;

- how to work alongside technical experts,  industry bodies and academics to develop laws and policies;

- how to engage with governments, industry bodies, NGOs and cross disciplinary experts to drive collaborative outcomes that align with business objectives; and

- the interplay between unlocking the values of ESG opportunities while managing legal risk.

Anchor 2

The terms "Sustainability", "ESG" and "Impact" may not mean the same thing to all of us; but there is little doubt that investors. governments and public interest groups will continue to encourage companies' to improve their ESG and climate-related performance and disclosures.

Our directors understand how businesses can unlock shareholder value through identifying ESG risks and opportunities. They are experienced at working alongside experts to understand the interplay between business and sustainability objectives and provide practical advice on Sustainability and ESG related disclosures, governance, protocols, assurance audits, projects and stakeholder engagements.

Businesses worldwide are facing more complex regulation than ever before. The risk profile of regulatory compliance is rapidly increasing, affecting new areas of business (for eg the impact of a company's compliance record on its governance scorecards).

Our directors have a wide depth of experience in working with regulators in the government, organs of State and public bodies on standard and novel regulatory issues. Our understanding of the principles of administrative justice and the legal and policy framework for decision-making, enables us to offer pragmatic and strategic solutions to regulatory-related matters.

The power industry in Southern Africa has undergone tremendous transformation over the last two decades, not only with respect to the array of energy sources available but also in respect of technology available  to capture and transform those alternative energy sources, into more sustainable outputs.

Our directors have extensive experience having supported many projects advising on hydrogen generation and use; retrofitting fuel cells into existing heavy mine equipment to advising on regulatory aspects regarding the role of clean power in the age of AI and digitisation.
